Business is personal. That was the tagline for my previous coaching business, but it really came home to me yesterday when I was working with a coach (Roxanne Howe-Murphy - one of the truly BRILLIANT people on this planet - she simply RADIATES strength, compassion, beauty, intelligence and knowledge. I've never quite experienced anyone like Roxanne in my life, until now. I'm very thankful for her wonderful friendship and support!).
Yesterday, we uncovered how a personal pattern I've had for years was the THING getting in my way of a prosperous business, an abundant life and lots of happiness. Don't get me wrong - I've had an AMAZING life so far. But in work (back on the farm, in school, in college, in jobs since college and in my own businesses), I've only done just enough to get by. Does this resonate for you?
Oh sure, I made good grades, did good work and always managed to be recognized, rewarded and promoted for the work I did. But the work was always easy for me and I didn't really do much (yes, I know, you all hate me because I didn't have to study in school, but still got good grades :) ). Back on the farm, I'd do just enough work so that my dad wouldn't kill me, then I'd sneak off to play. In school, I'd do just enough to get a B or an A, then I was off to do something more exciting. In work, I'd do enough work to make everyone else happy, but then I usually took off early to go play or explore. Now, some of you might say that sounds great - and it does! But, deep down, I realize that while it has served me in having lots of fun and freedom, that it's also prevented me from REALLY LIVING the way I want.
To be more specific, I've created my own reality where I'm not making enough money, we're not enjoying enough business and we're not as successful as we want, because we've done JUST ENOUGH to get by. We're not out of business, or bankrupt and we don't owe any creditors - that may be most business owners' dreams, but it's not mine and it's not my business partners' dreams either. We KNOW our services are amazing - our clients tell us all the time. We know we do GREAT work. And we started this business to be wildly successful. But we're just doing OK.
What now? I just had a conversation with my business partner Jerry, and this also resonated with him. A pattern that has served both of us, but has also prevented us from enjoying the success that we want. Now, it's time to get very clear about what we want (more to come on this). And then creating a higher bar so that we focus BEYOND enough, we stretch for MORE than is "just enough."
Does "just enough" resonate for you? Or are any other patterns in your personal life affecting the success of your business? Hit us on the comments below. Thanks!
