As part of my assignment to overcome the "just enough" syndrome that I've been dealing with the past 35 years, my coach asked me to get clear on what I REALLY want. What a powerful, profound, mind-boggling and very difficult thing to do! Here are some insights:
1.) I never really knew what I wanted. Life was pretty easy. I've had an amazing existence so far, but rarely did I ever get very clear on what it is that I'm wanting out of life. Serendipity has been very good to me, but she's not enough (maybe she was just enough all along). However, when I was clear, it was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to fail and was usually incredibly easy! (Like moving to California, changing careers and getting a 6-figure job in less than 5 days after deciding that's what I wanted!)
2.) There's the old cliche: "If you don't know where you're going, how will you know when you get there?" Well, I didn't have a clue where I was going (until this weekend). Sure, I had plans, I had dreams, I had a business, I had an amazing network of family and friends, but what did I WANT from all of those things? (If you think wanting something from those is a bad thing, then give me a call - we should talk. Humans are driven by their wants/needs and we're operating based on those all the time - whether we know it or not!)
3.) Living day to day is boring and sometimes reckless. I know that's a strong statement and there are scads of you who will disagree with me, but hear me out. Without getting clear about what I want, I'm not as motivated or inspired to take the actions to realize my dreams. When I'm 90, I don't want to look back and say "I wish I had...." Do you?
4.) While getting clear about what I REALLY want is an extremely difficul task, it's also one of the most liberating, inspiring, fun, educational and provocative things I've ever done. Why? Well, quite frankly, I already HAVE most of the stuff I REALLY want. That's incredibly powerful. More imporantly, I uncovered several things that are getting in my way of taking the action I want to be successful, such as money issues, fear, emotional traps and disempowering people.
Bottom line: Take some time to get clear about what you REALLY want! I promise you'll get to know yourself better and you'll have more information to make business and personal decisions easier!
How do you do it? Here's how:
Write out your thoughts to these seven simple, yet powerful questions:
1.) At my peak, what will my career/business look like?
2.) How much money do I need, including reserves/savings/investments, to live the life I've always dreamed about? (get specific on the NUMBERS here!)
3.) What types of personal relationships will support me in achieving my dreams? What kinds of people do I want in my life? And who in my life is disempowering me now?
4.) How will my health contribute to my overall success? What importance will health/fitness/nutrition play in my peak state? How will I maintain my health on a daily basis?
5.) Which skills, interests, hobbies or passions will I explore to inspire me personally?
6.) Which skills, interests or passions will I pursue to sustain me professionally?
7.) What BIG DREAMS have I always secretly desired to pursue/accomplish?
Give it a try and please let me know what you discover. I promise it'll be time well spent. Oh - and if you don't have an answer to any of the questions below, just pretend you have an answer - don't use excuses. After all, it's YOUR LIFE we're talking about here!
